After working all night with only a flashlight, an atrasero loads mock ore onto the shoulders of a child laborer at the Kematu gold mine in South Cotabato, Philippines. Discovery of gold in the indigenous T’boli region of southern Mindanao led to a brief rush from 1989-1992 that tempted Christian miners from other parts of Mindanao and Visayas to try their luck in the hazardous tunnels.
