Vicente Fortes, a garbage collector, is one of 66,000 squatters who live along the treacherous Philippine National Railway (PNR) tracks in Manila, Philippines. In preparation for its multi-million dollar expansion project, the government-run transport company issued a 60-day eviction notice in 2004 to tens of thousands of informal settlers who have made the narrow space along the tracks their home for decades.
